Surface Treatment of Mg-plates
Novel materials open up new fields of application for many existing products and can contribute to a more efficient materials usage when applied in new products. This holds especially true for the use of magnesium plates in the automotive and electrical industry sector. Magnesium exhibits high mechanical strength which suggests its use for lightweight engineering. However, magnesium does not form opaque layers (electrochemical stress series) which is why surface treatment becomes necessary. For this purpose, the magnesium plates are for instance ground or brushed.
This network has bundled capacities to develop an industrial plant or plant complex allowing for efficient and eco-friendly serial processing of magnesium plate surfaces, thus creating specific quality characteristics for subsequent application-specific coatings. Several small and medium-sized enterprises and research partners have worked together to solve these problems. The "Surface Treatment of Mg-plates" network was funded as a Network Management East (NEMO) project under the federal Central Innovation Program for SMEs (ZIM).
